  22.             As part of a network mapping project, we have implemented  a
  23.             TCP-based  geographic  name  server.  In response to queries
  24.             consisting of a city name and/or ZIP code  and  an  optional
  25.             state  and/or  country  abbreviation, the server retrieves a
  26.             variety of data from a database  containing  information  on
  27.             all  US  cities  (~150,000).  Queries containing UNIX ed(1)-
  28.             style regular expressions are also supported.

  30.             The geographic names database contains state, county,  lati-
  31.             tude and longitude for all US cities.  It also contains 1980
  32.             census population, elevation, area code, and ZIP code for  a
  33.             large  subset  of  the  cities, as well as a small number of
  34.             international cities.   The  database  contains  information
  35.             about  other  geographic  features such as counties, states,
  36.             rivers,  lakes,  summits,  etc.  in  addition  to  populated
  37.             places.

  39.             The raw data were obtained from the United  States  Geodetic
  40.             Survey (USGS) and the US Postal Service.  USGS is developing
  41.             a Geographic Names Information System  (GNIS)  as  the  main
  42.             repository for its ongoing National Gazetteer project.

  47.             face  is  self-explanatory,  though  not  necessarily human-
